SPAM MUSUBI RECIPE

The highly popular Spam Musubi is the darling snack of the Hawaiian people! Influenced by Japanese cuisine, Spam Musubi is similar to sushi. It is a bundle of steamed rice topped with a slice of fried spam and wrapped around with nori or edible seaweed. It is a simple, delicious, portable and the most inexpensive snack in Hawaii.

Prep time: 10 mins. Cooking time: 40 min. Total time: 10 mins. Servings: 10-12

Ingredients:

· 5 cups Sushi rice (or any short-grained rice)

· 1 can Spam (12 oz.), cut into 0.5-inch slices

· ¾ cup sugar

· ¾ soy sauce

· 5-6 sheets nori

· 2 tbsp. cooking oil

· Black ground pepper to taste

· Furikake for seasoning

Method:

· Cook the sushi rice as per instructions on the packet. Keep it aside for later.

· In a small bowl, add sugar, soy sauce and pepper. Mix well to get a fine consistency. Keep the sauce aside.

· In a frying pan, heat oil and fry the Spam slices on both sides until they are golden brown.

· As the Spam is cooking, cut the nori sheets into strips, just big enough to wrap the Spam Musubi.

· Once the Spam slices are nicely fried, turn off the heat. Now, pour the sauce over each slice and allow them to absorb the sauce flavors, with occasional flipping. Store the remaining sauce.

· Place a strip of nori on a flat surface. Using a musubi mold, create a tightly pressed block of rice over the nori. Sprinkle Furikake over it. Add a slice of spam over the rice and trickle some sauce over it. Now, wrap the two sides of the nori over the musubi and seal the edges by pressing gently.

· If you do not have a musubi mold, use the empty Spam can to create a block of rice. Cover the insides of the empty can with plastic wrap. Now add rice and press down to create a tight block. Extract the rice block by pulling out the plastic wrap. Place the rice block over a nori strip and the rest of the process is same.

Enjoy your exotic snack with a huge smile! Kāmau !!
